Potty training, letter sounds, and other excitement!

This past week included several interesting events, plus I remembered to carry my camera around, so I thought I would make another blog post.

Perhaps not life-changing interesting, but definitely a milestone in our family:
Wesley started using the potty!!!

Not consistently, but we have started the process. The big deal for me is that he now understands WHAT he is supposed to do when he's sitting on it! Over the past year he has spent hours sitting on the potty, but never actually doing anything other than carrying the inside scoop around on his head like a hat. He would get off and squat BESIDE his potty if he needed to go. (TMI? sorry! ;)
This week, however, the process went something like this:

Day 1: Fight with a kicking and screaming child to make him get into his underwear. Clean up numerous messes. Set the timer for 20 min and give him Skittles if he would only sit on the potty (never mind the going on it!) Go through all 10 pair of his new underwear. Clean up that many or more messes from the floor. (btw, how in the world does a parent potty train if they have carpet in their house??? SO grateful for tile!)
Day 2: Begging for candy. No longer fighting the underwear. Begging for candy. Sitting on the pot for an entire 3 episodes of Hoo Hoo Ha. Begging for candy. Pees all over the floor again. Begging for candy.
Day 3: A half day of attempts b/c we went out fabric shopping...more on that later.
Day 4: He did awesome! More times of going on the potty than on the floor! Ate.too.much.candy. Had a sugar high in the afternoon and crashed by 6 PM while begging for Hoo Hoo Ha.
Day 5: I thought we were making progress, but Friday he didn't go once on the potty ALL day. He got every single pair of his 10 pair of underwear wet, and consequently I cleaned up that many messes. Again.
Total relapse. We had fun playing toys...he seemed to have so much fun he forgot about the potty, and candy, and seemed to always go right before the buzzer went off to remind him to sit on the potty. Augh...hoping next week is better success!

Here are some photos of our playtimes together

We also enjoyed having friends come over to visit Briana! Here is our friend, Sophet with his son Boonleup. He's SUCH a sweetheart and really liked Briana! She seemed to like him, too. So many smiles! Oh dear...is this a picture of our future? :-/

It is not unusual for me to hear Wes counting or playing with his letters on his own.
This time I snuck in and caught him in action!!

Kim and I took the kids to have their photos taken for their Cambodia visa renewal.
The people at the shop loved the kids so much that they are putting big pictures of the kids on their walls!
I'll have to go back again sometime to see if they actually did it.

Here is Kim helping with Briana while I tried to get Wes to sit on the stool...

Turns out both kids did great!
(unlike our horrible experience getting passport photos taken of them in Ontario this summer!)

We went to a fabric market to look for some material to make curtains for our office!
It was a fun family outing!

This is Wes helping to measure out the fabric that we got.
I'll post pictures of the curtains once they're made! Hope they turn out!
At $2/meter it wasn't a huge expense, but I still want them to look nice...

It's easy for me to forget to take photos of what goes on outside of our home.
Usually because it's so busy I want to make sure we're all safe!
However, today I snapped a few pics of Joe & Wes crossing the street...

Phnom Penh Bible School is getting ready to kick off a new school year!
On Friday there was a special time for faculty and families to just visit with each other, welcome the newcomers, and enjoy a wonderful BBQ meal together. We're getting excited about soon welcoming the students back again in October!

Here is Wes and a few kids playing...

And Briana got to make a new friend, Leanna who is 1 years old!

This was Briana's official debut with the faculty staff. Hearts were won!! :D

Wes was SO ACTIVE all day long! Playing with his soccer ball and with his ball and bat, he was SO full of energy! By the time dinner was ready to start to eat, he was READY for dinner! He was digging into his bowl of rice and eating chicken before we even prayed!
Everyone is amazed at how MUCH he loves to play, his LOVE for life, contagious laugh, ENERGY, and how he is such a BOY in every way!
We sure love him.

The local boys on our street continue to come over to play the guitar.
I'm trying to teach them a few chords but they're not catching on too fast! haha
They enjoy looking at sheet music and trying to figure out how to play it on the guitar.
For the most part, it's just noise, but they really are enjoying exploring the instrument. I love their love of music!

Since we've been back, Wes seems to have "outgrown" his afternoon nap.
However, he crashes at night! We're trying to still give him a quiet time in the afternoon, but he has such a love for playing that it's hard for him to do it quietly. Poses like this at 6 PM is the result of no real quiet time and no afternoon nap. I think it's so cute!! haha

Briana thinking of her cousin Joanna in this outfit! Joanna has one matching. We miss you!

These are two kinds of fruit that are in season right now and I LOVE munching on!
Lychee and Rambutan.
Hey, if I live in SE Asia, I should enjoy their many different kinds of fruit!
The best way to describe the fruit is like a grape. When you peel off the outside skin, the inside is like a peeled grape with one pit in the center. The lychee is very sweet; the rambutan is not quite as sweet, but juicy and yummy!

Finally, to finish off our post, a few pics of us enjoying our new family Sunday morning tradition at a pool close to our place...

This coming weekend we have our dear friend Ruoya coming to visit us!!!
We can't wait!!! I'll post pics of her visit in the next post.
And on that happy note... we'll see you next time!

(Briana at 9.5 weeks)

Love and miss you all!
Please pray with us as the PPBS students prepare to come back to school here in a few weeks, and for the faculty as they prepare classes and events for the students. We're excited about what God will do in the coming school year!
